The Ritual of the Consecration of Oils on the Dark Moon.

Oils have long played an important part in ritual and offering. They can be poured to the gods, added to lamps, used to anoint devotees or dress objects, they can be diffused in a burner, and even added to charcoal as incense. Their uses are only limited by one’s inspiration. Fragrant essential oils specifically are used to evoke the energy of a task or deity. The essential oil used during this ritual is a exotic blend of traditional and occult scents dedicated to Hekate, Goddess of Crossroads and Queen of the Dead. I created it to conjure up images of ancient Hellas, to capture the scents of dark temples in caves and beneath cities and inspire visions of rootcutters and witches meeting in secret groves at night. Whenever I consecrate Her oil I add a small garnet to assist in the process. Some believe stones can capture and hold energy and the garnet has associations with the pomegranate, the fruit it gets its name from, making it perfect for Hekate.

The importance of ritual consecration is emphasized by the fact that the consecration dedicates the oil to a specific task, in this case, the service of Hekate. The oil then becomes something sacred and less mundane. Once I light Her candles and lamps, and the shallow sound of occult hymns plays in the background the ritual starts by invoking the Queen of Witches to accept my sacrifice I have laid out: cheesecake topped with fig and lit by candle, a fresh unbroken egg, a clove of garlic, milk, honey, and wine. The air seems charged and the aggressive dance of the flames and the change in the smokes direction signal Her presence. Once communion is achieved I recite my ritual and chant hymns over the oils as incense swirls over the central shrine enveloping Her temple. I present them to the Dark Sky and the Dark Underworld and pass them through a the sacred incense, mixed using ancient formulas. By the ritual’s end the candle on the cake has burned out and the offering is ready to leave at the 3way crossroad for the apotropaioa. The oils then spend the night on the altar with a lamp lit for Hekate.

Thank you, I appreciate it! I have always found it fascinating how some misinterpret the gods (it has been my philosophy, which I learned from a Vodou Houngan, that the gods will allow you to do something until you know better). It would seem that there is a lack of historic information out there specific to the occult world and how the ancient gods fit into it. I will definitely be writing more soon.

Pan: Into the Grove at Twilight

As a practicing Hellenic pagan and witch, it was only natural that my patron god would be Pan. With that said, there is a lot of misconception about Pan, His true purpose and His origins. As we know, Pan is the god of shepherds, flocks, groves, forests and mountains. Most would equate that with being a mostly passive nature god. While much of His domain is protecting nature as Forest Ground’s Creator, His reach extends well beyond that. His appearance at pivotal moments in myths show that this god was much more important than modern poetry would claim.

Pan was primarily worshiped in Arkadia where He was said to wander the lonely hills and mountains. He could always be found chasing nymphs and seducing herdsmen. The deeper history of Pan, like most gods, has been lost to time but many scholars believe He was a god who was worshiped on the island long before the Olympians. With that said, the widely accepted parentage of Pan is Hermes and the daughter of Drypos or perhaps a nymph or Nereid, however if we examine His broader myths we will find that He is actually far older than Hermes and is most likely son of Ouranos and Gaia, under which He is called Titanopan. There are several clues to hint at this. First, Pan was there with the infant Zeus also raised on goat milk and honey (Aegipan, who is either Pan or a son of His) (3rd Century B.C.). Pan was there during the battle with the Titans and Typhon whom He inflicted with panic by ejaculating a loud and frightening roar, and He is attributed to teaching prophesy to Apollon and gifting Artemis Her hunting dogs, both of which these gods had very early in their history. It would seem that Pan moved through the ages and was in fact one of the first gods. One thing to point out is He has often be seen as separate from the Olympians. It was customary that when a new god was brought to the mainland in order to incorporate them into the existing pantheon they were given Olympian parentage. We see this with Dionysos and Hekate as well. The parentage of any god is always up for debate and in truth, it matters little to the gods themselves, but it is my personal opinion that Pan is actually a Titan son of Ouranos and Gaia and it is how He first appeared to me. Others can and may disagree and it is rightful to do so. I assure you it will have no effect on His glory or power, it is for Pan to show whomever He wishes whichever side of Him He chooses.

God of Witches

Now we can begin to look deeper into His authority and power to try to diversify His range as such a prominent god as to be called a patron as many in ancient Hellas did. Of course His role as God of Groves and Forests attracted me to Him being that I grew up surrounded by His domain but there was so much more. I have always viewed Him as King of Witches (this sentiment has little historical significance other than His later image post-Christianity as well as the few noted examples throughout the Renaissance and Victorian eras). It was mainly His gifts of prophesy and divination that may have led to this association (He even had oracles much like Apollon), this and His lusty nature surrounded by nymphs, maenads, and forest dwelling herdsmen. Rites were held for Him at night and were approached naked and loud. Frenzy and intoxication were often accompanied by orgies especially when worshiped alongside Dionysos. The Roman three day festival of Lupercalia (February 13-15) was dedicated to Him in which dogs and goats were sacrificed and fertility rites were held. He could even be petitioned for protection as well as to drive others mad which was the case when the Celts tried to sack Delphi in the 3rd century B.C. The Hellenics prayed to the gods for help and were answered with lightning, thunder, earthquakes and the most amazing show of Pan’s power. The night after the unsuccessful siege due to the fearsome weather, panic descended on the camp and the Celts split into factions and began to frantically attack each other. Brennus, who led the division was wounded by Hellenics who seized the opportunity to attack during the madness, then killed himself by drinking poisoned wine. He also displayed His power similarly earlier at the Battle of Marathon in which He appeared to the runner Philippedes and guaranteed victory if the Athenians would worship Him. They agreed and were in fact victorious. Among the dead of the Persian invaders was Polyzelos who was blinded by the apparition of Pan who rose up before him. Pan is a very literal god and will manifest in real world sense. He will make you feel panic, lustful, and erratic. I remember the day I sculpted my Pan statue and housed Him in His shrine. My partner and I started to feel odd as if something was ‘not normal’ and we both felt anxious and, of course, panicky. This is why He has taken on the title ‘King of Witches’ as was stated in ‘Arcana Mundi’ by Georg Luck, the fact that He has such tangible interaction with His witches when He is petitioned. That coupled with the fact that He is said to have vast knowledge of herbs, trees, roots, and mushrooms which grow on His forest floors. He is the giver of great power and can overcome even the largest army. He does this most skillfully, by inflicting madness. This makes Him particularly effective when dealing with your enemies which I will delve into in another post.

After the rise of Christianity the image of Pan with His horns, hooves, and erect penis which surrounded Rome gave the Church the perfect image for their new incarnation of evil, the Devil. Surely, as with all the old gods, He was worshiped in secret throughout the ages and this esoteric practice naturally began to experience a shift into the occult. One must remember that the concept of witches in the ancient world per-Christianity was a lot different than the ages that followed, most notably that there was no real concept, at least not how we think of them. Of course there were sorceresses and their male counterparts as well as the pharmakis but the witch as we know it today was not even an idea. The ancients freely worshiped and what we call witchcraft would just be naturally built in. They would sacrifice, curse, petition, bless, purify, divine, heal, seek council with the dead and ask for all sorts of favors utilizing all manner of practice. The Church saw all of this as heresy and banned it under the strictest of penalties and demonized the gods who were of most prominence in such services. Shortly after that the concept of the witch as adversary of darkness was created and they had a new king, Pan.

Enter: The Devil

“Take care to proclaim the Great God Pan is dead!”

A quote that had more meaning than it would seem! Heard by Thamus in the early centuries AD, this was quite a shock to those who loved the god. The fact is, in some ways the Great God Pan did “die” only to be born under a new image as mentioned before. His prevalence grew to exceed His current seat and His image grew from frenzy and ecstasy to darkness and perversion, which I am sure He doesn’t mind. When Pan took on the role of the Devil, His natural domain spread from the wilds of the earth to the wilds of the heart of men. Not only did He command the untamed beasts and entities of Nature, He began to amplify human urges and instinct. Now, it is important to note that the image of Pan was not an exclusive “Devil” as the demon’s forms included a whole host of twisted, unnatural combinations but it did not leave this god out and no other god has been so intertwined with the Devil as Pan has. When a Christian looks upon His image their mind instantly descends to one place, Hell. At the time it was proclaimed “Great God Pan is dead”, His worship did not cease and of course it continued. Some years later, as Christianity began to spread and the image of the Devil grew with it, the ancient festivals were also beginning to be transformed from sacred rites to conventions for witches. Familiar images began to reemerge of women dancing naked around the Sabbatical Goat drunk and erotic, very reminiscent of the Bacchic and Panic rites now labeled the Witch’s Sabbath.

Pan in the role of the Devil, and King of All Witches, had His power amplified. His lust, prophetic talents, rule over the wild, and power endowment all became symbols of witchcraft. The truth is, He has always had these associations so it is not as if His history has been rewritten. It is merely the connotation in which His powers lie that has changed. He was given rule over the sins of mankind which resonate in the Natural world, all things the Church declared as evil. But this cannot stop Pan. He is at home above the ground in the highest mountains as well as the deepest pits of Hell. After all, Everything Underground is Moving because of Him.

‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’

Now that we have explored His more occult side we can emphasis His more outward dominion. Pan has always been a protector of animals. He has strong associations with wolves, goats, and tortoises. He protects wild animals as well as domesticated ones so He is a favored god for those with pets. His solar association is relatively new with the exception of His noontime naps. When the sun is at its height no man should petition or approach the god as His temper is severe. He also had a fire burning at His temple at all times which may have symbolized His prophetic power (and is also the reason I depict Him with a solar disk, not as the sun but as His eternal light).

If one is to worship Pan there are several things that should be considered. First, Pan is worshiped as a chthonic god. Not in the Underworld sense but as an earthly god. He is given offerings of milk, honey, wine, fruits, water, blood, oil and offerings similar to Dionysos and Hekate. He should never be evoked or invoked during His noontime nap even in emergencies. I usually give Him until about 2pm before I will honor Him again. It is best to approach His altar (which, as a chthonic god, should be as close to the ground as possible) naked while making some sort of noise. This is especially true of androgynous devotees. He does not take kindly to being confused about which sex someone is. Try to keep a light for Him as often as possible. I keep a lamp where I burn pure oil as often as possible, it is not an essential thing that this is done but it will make His prophetic power more prolific.

I wanted to take the time to introduce my two most beloved gods, Hekate (in a previous post) and Pan. While I whisper to a few other gods, They are most prominent and have become an important part of my life, not just spiritually but physically as well. I try to worship Them as traditional as possible and work with Them through my craft in such a way that respects and honors those traditions. It is very important to me to try to preserve who They are and abandon any thoughts otherwise. The gods have many roles and they will typically come to each of us in certain ways. While Their main personality should always be recognized (usually the aspect that is more widely represented in legitimate historical practice can be seen as their main personality), we each may have different interactions with Them and should always respect that as well as Their history. They shouldn’t be over-complicated, over-analyzed, or misrepresented. I hope I was able to shed some insight into my gods and from this point forward perhaps these views can help explain why I practice certain ways. In my practice Hekate and Pan are the Witch’s Gods. It was Pan who first came to me as a child and sparked my interest in the secret workings of the Universe and it is Pan who will be honored by me as my King and God in this life and hopefully the next.
